The Quincy School Board agreed Wednesday to seek a $5 million line of credit. But it did so over the objections of Melvin "Bud" Niekamp, who accused the board of overspending. "Just a few short months ago we voted that we had a balanced budget. Now I'm finding out that we're going to have to borrow maybe up to $5 million," Niekamp said. "It's taxpayers' dollars. We're going to have to get a handle on this spending. We just can't keep borrowing money all the time. I run a small business. I sure don't borrow money. I just live within my means. I think the School Board needs to do the same thing." Bill Daniels, chairman of the Finance Committee, said the line of credit is needed to help cover any cash flow problems that might materialize in the final months of the fiscal year, which ends June 30. Last year around this time, the district took out an $8 million line of credit and ended up borrowing $2.6 million on a short-term basis to cover the district's ongoing shortfall.
